Stephen A. Hurlbut
(November 29, 1815 — March 27, 1882) Stephen Augustus Hurlbut was an American politician and lawyer. Hurlbut was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1815 and moved to Illinois in 1845. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1837. After moving to Illinois, Hurlbut served in the State constitutional convention in 1847, as well as in the State House of Representatives in 1859, 1861, and 1867. During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army and attained the rank of brigadier general. Hurlbut was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1877. However, he unsuccessfully ran as an Independent Republican to the Forty-Fifth Congress in 1876. After serving in Congress, Hurlbut served as Minister to Peru until his death in 1882.
