The Civil Rights Act of 1875

William M. Merrick

(September 1, 1818 — February 4, 1889) Merrick was a lawyer, professor of law, judge, and politician. William Matthew Merrick was born in Charles County, Maryland. He attended Georgetown University and University of Virginia at Charlottesville. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1839. Merrick served as an associate justice of the United States Circuit Court for the District of Columbia from 1854 to 1863 and later worked as a professor of law and Columbian College (now George Washington University). He served as a delegate to the Maryland State constitutional convention in 1867 and also served as a member of the State House of Delegates in 1870. Merrick was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873.
