The Civil Rights Act of 1875

Daniel T. Jewett

(September 14, 1807 — October 7, 1906) Jewett was a businessman, lawyer, and politician. Daniel Tarbox Jewett was born in Pittston, Maine in 1807. He graduated from Columbia College and studied law at Harvard Law School. Jewett was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Bangor, Maine. In 1850, he began operating a steamboat line on the Chagres River in the Isthmus of Panama with his brother. After which, he moved to California and worked as a gold miner for two years. Jewett moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1857 and started his political career. He served in the State House of Representatives before being elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Charles Drake. He served in the Senate from December 19, 1870 to January 20, 1871.
