Thomas Whitehead

(December 27, 1825 — July 1, 1901) Thomas Whitehead was a businessman, politician, and lawyer. Whitehead was born in Lovingston, Virginia in 1825. He had limited schooling and worked in the mercantile business while studying law. Whitehead was admitted to the bar in 1849 and practiced law in Amherst, Virginia until the outbreak of the Civil War. During the war, he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served as a captain. Whitehead was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1875. After serving in Congress, he resumed practicing law while also working as editor of Virginian publications. In 1888, Whitehead was elected commissioner of agriculture for the State of Virginia and served until his death in 1901.
