The Civil Rights Act of 1875

Asa H. Willie

(October 11, 1829 — March 16, 1899) Willie was lawyer, judge, and politician. Asa Hoxie Willie was born in Wilkes County, Georgia and moved to Texas in 1846. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1848. Willie served as district attorney of the third judicial district of Texas from 1852 to 1854. He enlisted in the Confederate army and attained the rank of major. After the war, Willie was elected an associate justice of the Texas Supreme Court but was removed by the military commander in 1867. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1875. After serving in Congress, Willie was elected the Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court and served from 1882 until he resigned in 1888.
