Willis B. Machen

(April 10, 1810 — September 29, 1893) Machen was a businessman and politician. Willis Benson Machen was born in Kentucky in 1810. He attended Cumberland College in Princeton, Kentucky before working in agriculture. Machen served as a member of the State constitutional convention in 1849; he also served in the State Senate (1854), and the State House of Representatives (1856, 1860). Machen was elected to the First and Second Confederate Congresses during the Civil War, and continued his political career in the federal government after the war. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of Garrett Davis. He served in the Senate from September 27, 1872 to March 3, 1873.
