(30 January 1752 – 6 November 1816) Lawyer, legislator and diplomat. Having practised law, he was elected to the New York State Assembly at the start of the Revolution and then the Continental Congress. His family were large landowners and had owned slaves, though he had become a staunch abolitionist. After moving to Philadelphia, he was selected as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention for Pennsylvania. He was later US Ambassador to France where he became caught up in the French Revolution. On his return to America he joined the US Senate, representing New York.
