(1740 – 2 November 1807) Merchant, planter, slave owner, lawyer and infantry officer. After serving as a colonel in both the militia and Continental Army he was elected to the North Carolina Senate. He was later state Governor and a delegate to the Constitutional Convention. He remained Governor for a time before joining the US Senate.
