(August 12, 1831 — October 27, 1887) Ritchie was a lawyer, judge, and politician. John Ritchie was born in Frederick County, Maryland, where he completed his preparatory studies as Frederick Academy. He initially studied medicine but switched over to law. He studied law at Harvard University and was admitted to the bar in 1854. Richie was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873. After serving in Congress, Ritchie was appointed to be chief judge of the Sixth Judicial Circuit and an associate judge of the court of appeals. He served in that capacity for fifteen years, until he died in October 1887.
