(July 4, 1816 — June 17, 1880) Howell was an American politician, businessman, and lawyer. James Bruen Howell was born in Morris County, New Jersey and moved to Ohio in 1819 with his parents. There, he attended public schools and graduated from the Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Howell studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1839. He moved to Iowa in 1841 and continued practicing law in Iowa. He also started a newspaper. Howell was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of James Grimes. He served in the Senate from January 18, 1870 to March 3, 1871.
