Thomas Fitch Visualize (January 27, 1838 — November 12, 1923) Fitch was a lawyer, editor, and public servant. Thomas Fitch was born in New York City and moved to Nevada after settling in California in 1860. While in California, Fitch served as a member of the California Assembly (1862-1863), when he moved to Nevada in 1863. There he was a member of the State constitutional convention in 1864. Fitch was elected as a Republican to the Forty-First Congress from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1871. John P. Jones Visualize (January 27, 1829 — November 27, 1912) Jones was a farmer, miner, and politician. John Jones was born in Herefordshire, England and immigrated to the United that same year with his parents. After growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, Jones moved to California, where he served as county sheriff and a member of the State Senate (1862-1867). He moved to Nevada in 1868 and worked as a miner until 1873 when he was elected to the United States Senate. He served in the Senate as a Republican from 1873 to 1903. Charles W. Kendall Visualize (April 22, 1828 — June 25, 1914) Kendall was an editor, proprietor, and lawyer. Charles Kendall was born in Waldo County, Maine and moved to California after completing his education at Yale College. While in California he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1859. He served as a member of the State Assembly (1861-1862) before moving to Hamilton, Nevada in 1862. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives. Kendall served from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1875. James W. Nye Visualize "(June 10, 1815 -- December 25, 1876) James Warren Nye was a lawyer, judge, president of a board of police, governor, and American politician. Nye was born in De Ruyter, Madison County, New York and moved to Nevada Territory in 1861. Nye studied law and was admitted to the bar. He was a district attorney (1839), Judge of Madison County (1840-1848), and served as the first president of the Metropolitan Board of Police, New York City (1857 - 1860). He was appointed as governor, by Abraham Lincoln in 1861, of the new Nevada Territory. He was not a successful candidate as a Free-Soiler to the 30th Congress. He was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate (February 1, 1865, reelected in 1867 and served until March 3, 1873), where he was chairman on the Committee on Enrolled bills (39th Congress), served on the Committee on Revolutionary claims (40th Congress), and on the Committee on Territories (41st Congress). William M. Stewart Visualize "(August 9, 1827 -- April 23, 1909) William Morris Stewart was a math teacher, gold miner, lawyer, public servant, and American Politician. Stewart was born in Galen, Wayne County, New York and moved to California and then Virginia City, Nevada in 1860. Stewart studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1852. He was a district attorney (1852), attorney general of California (1854), and was involved in early mining litigation and in the development of the Comstock lode. He was a member of the territorial council in 1861 and a member of the State constitutional convention in 1863. He was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1864 and was reelected in 1869 (February 1865 - March 3, 1875), where he was chairman on the Committee on Pacific Railroads (42nd Congress) and on the Committee on Railroads (43rd congress). He was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1887 and was reelected as a Silver Republican in 1893 and 1899. He served from March 4, 1887 to March 3, 1905, where he was chairman on the Committee on Mines and Mining (50th-56th Congresses) and on the Committee on Indian Affairs (57th and 58th Congresses). He declined to be a candidate for reelection in 1905.
