Whereas R. R. Butler, Representative-elect from the first congressional district of Tennessee, performed honorable service in the Army of the United States from September, 1863, till May, 1864: Therefore,

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States in Congress assembled, That all legal and political[+e868661]the[-e868661] disabilities imposed by the United States[+e868661] upon Roderick R. Butler,[+e868661] of Tennesseor [+e868663]an[+e868662]y[+e868663]d all[+e868662 -e868663] other [+e868662]citizen of the United State[+e868663]person[+e868662 -e868663]s, [+e868662]e, in consequen[+e868661]by for[-e868661]ce of participation in [+e868661]the recent rebellion, be, and the same are hereby, remov[+e868661]act of Congress entitl[-e868661]ed.[+e868661] “[-e868661]And the said Butler, on entering upon[+e868661] act to provide for[-e868661] the discharg[+e868661]mor[-e868661]e of duti[+e868661]es of any o[+e868661]ffice to wh[+e868661]ich he has be[+e868661]en or may be elected or appointed, instead[+e868661]t government[-e868661] of the oath prescribed by the act of July[+e868661]rebel States,” passed March[-e868661] 2, 1862[+e868661]7[-e868661], shall take [+e868661]and subscribe [+e868661]the following oath: I, Roderick R. Butler, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will[+e868661]act of Congress[-e868661] support and defend[+e868661]lementary[-e868661] the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign[+e868661]reto, passed March 23, 1867,[-e868661] and domestic; [+e868661]that I will bear true faith and allegiance to[+e868661]e act supplementary[-e868661] the same; that I take this obligation free[+e868661]reto, passed Ju[-e868661]ly 19[-e868661], without[+e868661]1867,[-e868661] and b[-e868661]y mental reservation or purpose of eva[+e868661]any provi[-e868661]sion, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties[+e868661] of the Constitution[-e868661] of the office on which I am about to enter, so help me Go[+e868661]United States, are hereby remove[-e868661]d.
