The Committee of Elections reports a joint resolution on the contested-election case of R. R. Butler
Be it resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives, &c., That R. R. Butler, Representative-elect from the first congressional district of Tennessee, be admitted to his seat upon taking the usual oath to support the Constitution of the United States, and upon taking so much of the oath prescribed by the act entitled “An act to prescribe an oath of office, and for other purposes,” approved July 2, 1862, as is not included in the following words, to wit: “That I have never voluntarily borne arms against the United States since I have been a citizen thereof; that I have voluntarily given no aid, countenance, counsel, or encouragement to persons engaged in armed hostility thereto; that I have ne[+e868560]ither sought nor accepted,[+e868560] not[+e868560]r[-e868560] attempted to exercise the functions of any office whatever,[+e868560] under any authority or pretended authority in hostility to the United States; that I have not yielded a voluntary support to any pretended government, authority, power, or constitution within the United States hostile or inimical thereto[+e868560].”
