Samuel S. Cox

United States Thirteenth Amendment 1863-65

(30 September, 1824 -- 10 September, 1889) Cox was an American lawyer and politician serving both Ohio and New York. Born in Muskingum County, Ohio, Cox studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1849. Cox was elected as a Democrat from Ohio to the Thirty-fifth and to the three succeeding Congresses. Cox moved to New York in 1865 and was elected from New York to the Forty-first and Forty-second Congresses. Later, Cox was elected to the Forty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James Brooks. Cox was reelected to the Forty-fourth and to the five consecutive Congresses.
