John B. Alley

(7 January, 1817 -- 19 January, 1896) Alley was an American shoemaker, businessman, and politician. Born in Lynn, Essex County, Mass., Alley was at the age of fourteen apprenticed as a shoemaker, however, he was released at nineteen. In 1838, Alley entered the shoe manufacturing business. Alley was a member of the State senate in 1852 and was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and to the three succeeding Congresses.
