The Road to Civil War

George P. Fisher

(13 October, 1817 -- 10 February, 1899) Fisher was an American lawyer and politician. Born in Sussex County, Del., Fisher studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1841. Fisher served as a member of the State House of Representatives in 1843 and 1844, as secretary of state in 1846, and Confidential Clerk to Secretary Clayton in the Department of State at Washington in 1849. Later, Fisher served as commissioner to adjudicate claims against Brazil from 1850 to 1852 and was the Attorney General of Delaware from 1857 to 1860. Fisher was elected as a Unionist to the Thirty-seventh Congress and served from March 4th, 1861 to March 3rd, 1863. After an unsuccessful candidacy for the Thirty-eighth Congress, Fisher was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia. After resigning, Fisher was appointed District Attorney for the District of Columbia and served until 1875. Fisher served as First Auditor of the Treasury Department from 1893 until his death in 1899.
