Edward H. Smith

(May 5, 1809 — August 7, 1885) Edward Henry Smith, a Representative from New York; born in Smithtown, Long Island, Suffolk County, N.Y., May 5, 1809; attended private schools; engaged in agricultural pursuits; served as justice of the peace in the township of Smithtown 1833-1843, assessor 1840-1843, and supervisor 1856-1860; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1861-March 3, 1863); was not a candidate for renomination in 1862; resumed farming in Suffolk County, N.Y.; died in Smithtown, N.Y., August 7, 1885; interment in St. James' Protestant Episcopal Cemetery, St. James, Long Island, N.Y.
