Ralph Izard

(23 January 1742 – 30 May 1804) Planter, U.S. Senator, and U.S. Senate President pro tempore. Fascinated by Europe, Izard spent some years in Italy, England, and France; he was the first patron in Europe of American painter John Singleton Copley. He defended slavery and was himself a slave owner.
