James Jackson

(18 October, 1819 -- 13 January, 1887) Jackson was an American lawyer and politician. Born in Jefferson County, Ga., Jackson studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1839. Jackson served as secretary of the State senate in 1842 and served in the State House of Representatives from 1845 to 1849. Later, Jackson served as judge of the Superior Court from 1846 to 1859. Jackson was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses and served from March 4th, 1857 to January 23rd, 1861 when he retired. Jackson practiced law until 1875 when he moved to Atlanta, and was appointed an Associate Justice of the State Supreme Court in 1875. Jackson served as Chief justice of Georgia from 1879 until his death in 1887.
