B. Gratz Brown

United States Fourteenth Amendment & The Civil Rights Act of 1866

(28 May, 1826 -- 13 December, 1885) Brown was an American lawyer and politician. Born in Lexington, Ky., Brown studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1849 to begin practice in St. Louis, Missouri. Brown was a member of the State house of representatives (1852-1858), and was elected as an Unconditional Unionist to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy created by the expulsion of Waldo P. Johnson serving from November 13th, 1863 to March 3rd, 1867.
